I’m so proud to become a Get Out and Grow Sudocrem Ambassador. We all know how important it is to encourage children to get outside in the fresh air. A lot of parents either don’t have the time or the capabilities to garden. I’m absolutely useless and I’ve never had green fingers, no plant is safe in my house, which is why I’m so excited to announce the Get Out and Grow School Gardening Kit giveaway.
This fantastic campaign has been launched after a recent survey revealed that 90% children said that they wanted a garden at school. The Benjamin Adlard Primary School in Lincolnshire found that a school garden made a massive difference when it came to pupils behaviour. Run by headmaster Sam Coy, this Lincolnshire Primary School was once rated by Ofsted as one of the worst schools in Britain. Four years and one school garden later, Lincolnshire Primary School and the Gainsborough School has won the national Pearson award for the School of the Year: Making a Difference.
Headmaster Coy insists: “The children absolutely love den-building, just generally getting dirty and nature hunts. One child recently told me that he loves going to the forest school on a Tuesday afternoon so much, as it helps him to behave all week as he never wants to not be able to go”. The Get Out and Grow campaign first launched in June and 20 lucky schools, nationwide will have the chance to win a School Gardening Starter Kit worth £160. How amazing is that?!

Sponsored by British skincare brand, Sudocrem, the Get Out and Grow project was created after research revealed that despite 87% of British households owning a garden, over half of British children aged between 4 and 8 weren’t able to name 5 vegetables or fruits grown in gardens. Around 95% weren’t able to name 3 herbs, many children weren’t able to identify gardening tools, 80% had never seen a rake before and a worryingly 79% believed that worms were bad for plants. Less than 10% had dug up a vegetable and only 6% had eaten a fresh pea from the pod. Based on this evidence, it’s not surprising that only 20% of children have ever eaten anything they have grown themselves.
