Sometimes the simple toys are always the most fun. I’m a big fan of toys that encourage children to use their imaginations. Over the years I have learnt the painfully expensive lesson, that the novelty of flashing, gimmicky toys that deliberately play annoyingly catchy tunes wears off very quickly. I have lost count of the number of plastic toys we have brought the girls that end up shoved into the depths of their toy boxes.
The girls were sent a brilliant and simple sensory play set called Tactile Shells by Edxeducation and they have had an endless amount of fun. This eco-friendly toy is plastic free, it contains 36 shells with 6 different tactile surfaces and 3 different sizes, a handy cotton bag for storage and an activity guide. Tactile Shells are suitable for children aged 18+months and they are perfect for sensory play. The activity guide is very helpful and it gives parents plenty of ideas to get the most out of the sensory shells.
From counting and sorting, sequencing and patterning, matching and comparing, Tactile Shells have many educational benefits. Bella really enjoyed sorting the shells and matching them and Flo got stuck straight into imaginative play, where Owlette from PJ Masks was trapped in a tumbling tumbleweed made out of shell and she had to use her super owl wind to break free. Together we made shapes and letters and the girls had to guess what they were. By exploring the shells and talking about the different textures, size and weight, you are also helping to extend your child’s vocabulary.
These Tactile Shells would make an excellent Tuff Tray activity, you could use mirrors and encourage your little ones to explore the concept of symmetry. Create an under the sea themed invitation to play and ask your children to hide treasures inside the shells or you could set up a Play Doh Tuff Tray and ask your little ones to explore the imprints of the shells. The possibilities for play really are endless.
The girls had so much fun playing shops with Tactile Shells. Bella was the shop and shell keeper and Flo brought new customer’s to buy shells. The Gruffalo, Elsa and Anna, Poppy, T-Rex and a Triceratops all came to shop, it was a very busy morning. I am very impressed with this play set and I will definitely be incorporating Tactile Shells in our everyday, learning through play activities.
